Background

Imperial Guard in the Empress' Court

Hida Bob was born just before the War Against the Shadow, in 1123. Bob's family has lived in the same village for 15 generations, and his father Hida Ma'an is currently in charge of the small village of Miyagi-mura. Miyagi-mura is located in the northern Kyouken Province near the border with the Crane Lands. Bob's early life was spent the same as most young crab, he played Defender of the Wall, and learning the basics of all martial forms for fighting. When Bob turned 9, he was sent to the Hida Bushi Dojo at Kyuden Hida to begin his school training. Bob studied under one of the minor sensei's of the dojo, Hida Rojo. Under Rojo-sensei, Bob was able to become a skilled user of all heavy weapons, as well as mastering the basics of Iaijutsu, a skill most Crab scoff at. Bob's gempukku was a thrilling three days south of the wall. Bob has always been a bit self-centered; he never likes to bother other people with problems without seeing if he can handle the problem on his own first. And this came up during his first Oni kill. Bob was sent south with his finger of jade and rations and told to bring back the head of an oni. His first day south he came upon a Ratling warren that had been slaughtered within the past few days. The tracks Bob found were not the tiny feet of goblins, but the large tracks of an oni spawn. Some might have just gone to report the issue, and then continued looking for a goblin to kill, but Bob has never been the smartest samurai out there. Bob followed the tracks for two more days, until he found the creature resting after killing two other samurai that had been sent out for their gempukku. Bob was able to jump off a nearby outcropping and strike down on the back of the neck of the Kyoso-no-Oni spawn. She was still injured from her previous battle, Bob's tetsubo broke through the skin on her neck and shot the vertebrae out the front of kyoso's neck like baseballs, her head coming clean with the return swing. Bob took the swords off his fallen companions, beheaded the corpses, and set a fire upon which to burn the bodies. After the samurai were burned cremated; Bob headed back to the wall. When he returned, he presented the head to his superiors, and brought the daisho of his clan mates back to their families. Normally a crab who brought back an oni spawns head for his gempukku would have been given a squad to command, or begun training to lead, but Bob didn't exhibit the traits of an officer, he acted as what he was, a blunt tool to stand on the wall. Having completed his gempukku, Bob was assigned to the wall, and served there for six months before he was send by Hida O-Ushi-sama to attend the Topaz Championships as a guide for the clan's representative.
