You cannot live while hiding from life.
- Tao of Shinsei

First Impression

Tall and broad-shouldered, Tanaro is a giant of a man, his heritage impossible to hide. Where some might expect an oaf, others see the shrewd intelligence in the twinkle of his eyes and his relaxed pose. He wears his court kimono with a practiced ease, and while he can be as blunt as any Crab, he is better with words than most of his kin. He might look like a bushi, but he is definitely not one.

Most of the time he appears to be in a good mood, quick to laugh, and always ready for a game of words or a wrestling match. Occasionally, when nightmares plague his sleep, he takes on a more haunted far-away look. At times like these people will find him in a shrine or in the sumai dojo in an attempt to find his balance once again whether through meditation or physical exercise.

Background

Life among the Crab is never easy, and while the Wall protects their holdings against most incursions it is not airtight. Tanaro’s life was no different from his kinsmen. Unlike most he had a collusion with something dark at a young age. He remembers little beyond the images that haunt his nightmares. The blistering summer heat, the dust and the sounds of laughing children playing one game or another. Blood, pain, helplessness, something innocent becoming horrifying and murderous. Something killed those children and their caretakers, but he cannot remember what or how. His elders could or would not tell. His father found him shambling along the path to his village, heavily wounded and feverish. Somehow he had escaped and survived the massacre.

The fever nearly killed him still, but under the care of the Kuni he survived and the fever broke. Unable to find any taint, or perhaps as a result of their treatment, they declared him cured. Physically fine, the event left its scars and soon after his senseis realized he would be ill-suited indeed to a life on the Wall. Tanaro was not a coward. He was fearless when facing men or nature, but something gnawed at his composure just at the thought of dealing with the Shadowlands and its ever present taint. Embarrassed his parents send him to the Yasuki dojo, hoping he would at least serve his clan as a courtier.

A warrior at heart, it took some time to get used to his new surroundings and training. Once settled though he proved remarkably well-suited to the life as a courtier and merchant. He might not be a bushi, but he would serve his clan no matter what. He never lost his zeal for physical training, finding an odd kind of comfort in the art of Sumai including the spiritual rituals surrounding it. Seeing Sumai as a skill worthy of a courtier, realizing it allowed the boy to lose some excess energy, his sensei favored his hobby.

After his gempukku, he decided to do pledge to serve the Kaiu and help them acquire the necessary equipment for their engineer projects for he is all too aware of how important their work is for the safety of the Empire. Now he travels Rokugan looking for the premium materials they need while also maintaining his position at a Sumai dojo and joining as many tournaments as his free time permits.
