Moshi School Shugenja

Appearance:

Suzume Edo is a rather unassuming young man, with modestly down-cast eyes and slow, graceful movements when indoors or performing the various ceremonies related to his duties. At night, his movements often appear to become lethargic. He has trouble saying awake and alert after sunset, after which his movements become ever more studied and careful. By day however, he can become a veritable whirlwind of energy at a moments notice and often struggles to contain his early morning exuberance. Opponents who are used to the slow, methodical Suzume Edo of the court are often caught off-guard by the swift, decisive Edo of the dueling ground.

Personality:

An intelligent and perceptive young man, Edo is acutely aware of the sacrifices made by his family to ensure he could undergo Shugenja training with the Moshi school. As such, he feels the heavy weight of his families expectations. Edo has a gentle but unfortunately mocking wit that he struggles to control in mixed company. Moreover, he cannot resist a good story, nor the lure of gossip and scandal. He takes a genuine delight in such things and, while not deliberately malicious, struggles to prevent his knowledge of such news from "slipping out" in his excitement.

This is all the more unfortunate considering that his normally discerning nature completely abandons him at the first hint of scandal. When it comes to gossip and scandal, Edo is altogether far too gullible and will believe almost anything, no matter how outlandish. Edo consequently finds himself embroiled in Iaijitsu duels much more often than his Clan (and Daimyo) would like.

History:

The only son of Suzume Kensho and his wife, Suzume (formerly) Moshi Omi. The marriage of Suzume's parents caused something of a scandal due to rumours that Moshi Omi was already pledged to a Major Clan samurai. Regardless of the reality, Suzume Kensho was forced to duel a famed kakita duelist named Kakita Mori on the evening of his wedding. To this day, Sparrow bushi still enjoy telling the story of how Suzume Kensho had to be held up with his two brothers on either side during his wedding ceremony.

Edo's parents acquired many favours with the Mantis clan during his childhood, ensuring that Edo would be accepted for training as a Moshi shugenja. As one of the few Shugenja in the Sparrow Clan, his great-uncle Suzume Gesshin has high hopes for Edo's future. Others within the Sparrow clan note that Moshi school shugenja have little facility for communing with earth Kami, and cannot help but wonder aloud if all that influence might have been better spent acquiring a place for young Edo in a school whose affinity for kami would be more useful in agriculture.
