Background

During the clan war, a number of Phoenix got corrupted with the taint, Isawa Reiko's parents, both minor assistants in the service of the elemental council were two of them. What this meant though was during the fighting leading up to the day of thunder both were slain. As Reiko was just 7 at the time and just starting her training as shugenja, she did not know what it other than her mother's grandmother of the shiba family came for her to let her know that when her training finished, she would be serving the Shiba as she did since it was decided it was best to distance her from the council.

Her training continued through the war against the shadow and finally she reached gempuku having spent as much time as possible among the books to reading to try to understand the world. Knowing that she was going to be serving among the shiba, she chose to learn the blade arts like to understand those she would be with and so when the time came, she received her grandfather's daisho as she had no siblings and her mother was only child as well. This did not meet with her grandmother's approval who felt she as the last of the line she should be getting married and having children to continue the line.

It was a couple months after that, her great grandmother passed away but to Reiko, it is like she has never been gone. Grandmother still constantly makes it known her disapproval for her adeptness with the blade, her unmarried state and lack of children to continue the line, her serving with phoenix armies instead following path of pure peace. She keeps getting warned that she is following the path of Isawa Asahina and warned about it.

Since her gempuku, she has served the clan in many roles though most have been away from the court since she never developed much skill in court, preferring books save when her daimyo sends her tasks to serve his interests. She has several times lasted well into the later rounds of his history questions and even once had the honor of being the questioner.
